What My Parents Taught Me

From the time I was 12 years old, I was working in some capacity, to earn a little money, and to get to know people. My uncle was the head of buildings and grounds at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, so I began checking coats at black tie events during the winter, and in the summers I worked on the VMFA landscaping crew.

With a Passion for Justice

I repeated the pledge of allegiance, every day of my elementary and junior high school days, with the closing phrase “…and justice for all.” During my active military service I deployed with the First Infantry Division in some inhospitable places, but it was always with a view to defending what I held precious, to be able to live in the “land of the free, and the home of the brave.”
